Introducing Cambridge

A beauty with some serious brains, Cambridge is home to one of the world’s ancient and elite seats of learning. Venerable alumni such as Isaac Newton, John Milton, Virginia Woolf and, more recently, Stephen Hawking have all mused along the city’s medieval passageways. The sublime King’s College Chapel, with its face to the River Cam and its back to King’s Parade, was built to the orders of King Henry VI in 1441. The chapel took more than 100 years to complete—the War of the Roses proved an inconvenient distraction.

With university graduates making up 40 per cent of Cambridge’s population, the city’s erudition is palpable. The Cambridge Footlights comedy ensemble exemplifies the creative vitality and experimentalism of the city’s thriving art scene, the nest from which many of the world’s most famous thespians and comedians have spread their wings. The Fitzwilliam Museum is one of the country’s finest cultural institutions. It features a jaw-dropping collection of antiquities and a stunning sculpture promenade.

Cambridge’s intellectual capital has driven innumerable start ups in the high-tech and bioscience industries; the city is known as ‘Silicon Fen.’ The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is one of the leading biomedical research centers in the world.

The Cam River offers unrivaled vistas of the University’s colleges and leafy grounds. There are few outdoor activities more civilized than punting on the river—that is to say propelling a flat-bottomed boat along shallow waters with a long wooden pole—regardless of the weather. Mad dogs and Englishmen come out in full force during the short summers, when artful languor gives way to inebriated pole jousting.
