Introducing Ibiza

Every July and August, revelers descend on the Balearic island of Ibiza. The whitewashed Dalt Vila (Old Town) encircled by ancient stone walls (a national monument), spills down the mountainside. Medieval cobblestone streets are lined with 15th-century town homes, gracefully aging palaces, and Gothic churches embellished with museum worthy frescos. If you need to escape the oppressive summer heat, the cool, white spaces of the Contemporary Art Museum, set ablaze with kaleidoscopic canvases, are worthy of an hour or two’s contemplation.

There are clusters of traditional towns far from the maddening crowds, including: Santa Gertrudis, with its charming cafés, and eclectic boutiques; the epicurean haven of San Rafael; and hip San Carlos which draws celebrity fashionistas to Las Dalias hippie market.

With a 125-mile-long coastline, Ibiza offers beaches for every mood and moment. The picturesque Cala Xuclà is a pebble beach lapped by shimmering turquoise waters. White sand Platja de Figueretes boasts every beach activity imaginable. The sheltered cove of Playa Es Jondal in San José has a holistic, chilled out vibe with oceanside massages, fresh fruit smoothies served by smiling waiters, and a family oriented beach club.
