Introducing Florence

The birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence has captivated the world’s most erudite, outrageously talented, and down right rich individuals for centuries. True to her name, Florence (‘may she flourish’) reached its zenith during the 15th-century rule and cultural patronage of the Medici family.

Florence is the ultimate museum city. The city’s tangled web of medieval streets with its stunning Renaissance architecture, feels totally untouched by time. There are beguiling Renaissance palaces, gilded mansions, sculpture gardens, piazzas that feel plucked from a Shakespearean tragedy, and ornate cathedrals and churches filled with works by Donatello and Ghiberti.

Michelangelo is the ultimate crowd pleaser. The Accademi is home to his David, but to see Michelangelo’s work without the crowds head to the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo which displays the artist’s unfinished Pietà (a work in progress at the time of the artist’s death in 1564). The small museum also houses one of Donatello’s masterpieces, Mary Magdalene.
