Introducing Dresden
Capital of the Saxon state, Dresden is synonymous with the trauma of World War II. Once known as the ‘Florence of the North,’ Saxon royalty made Dresden their home for almost 300 years (16th-19th century) and garnished the city’s streets with an array of architectural treasures. From the banks of the Elbe River, inspiring views of a skyline broken only by domes, turrets, and spires belie the apoplexy that engulfed the city during the war. Tragically, the rich Baroque architecture that graced the historic Old Town was pummeled by Allied forces during the final days of war. Over the last two decades, Dresden has slowly risen from the ashes with monumental restoration projects that have breathed new life into the city’s ailing structures. The city’s poster children, the Zwinger and the Frauenkirche, have been restored to their former splendor. Once again the city is at the vanguard of modern art and design. The New Green Vault, with its stunning fine art collection, forms the modern counterpart to the ancient treasures of the Historical Green Vault. There’s a verve to the New City (Neustadt), where the young and gilded congregate. Sleek restaurants rub shoulders with upscale boutiques and fashionable nightclubs.
