Capital of the region of Andalucía, Sevilla formed the heart of the Moorish empire and was the launchpad for New World discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries. The city’s venerable history is revealed through a mind-blowing juxtaposition of ancient architecture—Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque—that line the streets of the historic Old Town. The Cathedral of the Virgin Mary (occupying the site of a 12th-century mosque) with its Giralda, or bell tower (a former mosque’s original minaret), form the city’s spiritual heart. The spidery lanes of boho Triana is the best place to buy authentic handicrafts and to take in a traditional flamenco show, performed without an eye for the tourist greenback. From the impassioned cries of the bullfighting arena, to the pulsating beats of flamenco, Seville’s traditions run deep. A place of saintly devotion, the city’s religious festivals can feel like an out-of-body experience. From the colorful parades of Día de los Reyes Magos (Day of the Three Kings) to Semana Santa (Holy Week) when the streets are carpeted with flowers, Sevilla knows how to party in the name of gods and men.
