The ancient and modern glories of the City of Lights are so ingrained in the popular imagination that many visitors to the French capital slip effortlessly into the city’s rhythms, almost as though they are being reconnected with a former life. Paris is one of the world’s great cities and for all the clichés, and in spite of travelers’ high expectations, it rarely disappoints. Paris is not without its surprises or contradictions. It’s a leading center of European commerce, yet the city shuts up shop on Sundays. Paris may be a lot of things, bland and homogenous it certainly is not. When it comes to food, art, and fashion, Paris leads the way. Wearing trainers to dinner is deemed sacrilege in the city where ladies don their Chanel suit and Gucci heals just to take the dog to the park (and they are notorious for not cleaning up after their pampered pooches). From the French Gothic masterpiece of Notre Dame, to the majestic domes of the Sacré Coeur and the Eiffel Tower, Paris’ skyline is not without controversy. The Louvre—the largest museum in the world with more than 35,000 paintings— is fronted by a futuristic glass pyramid that had traditionalists up in arms for years. Loved and loathed in equal measure, the Centre Pompidou, with its pipes, cables, and ventilation nsystems integrated into the building’s facade, was considered the world’s most ultramodern construction when it was designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers in 1970. Inside, the Musée National d’Art Moderne (National Museum of Modern Art) has a superb collection of 20th-century art. On the Left Bank of the Seine, the Musée d’Orsay is a national treasure. Housed in a former Art Nouveau train station, it showcases the seminal works of France’s great Impressionist and post-Impressionist masters.
