Ever since Utah’s capital had its day in the sun as the host of the Winter Olympics in 2002, Salt Lake City has been unbuttoning its collar. The city of just 180,000 has rebranded its crusty image as the hallowed land where the Latter Day Saints hold court and getting a drink in a bar is pretty near impossible (Utah’s liquor laws were relaxed in 2003 for the first time since prohibition). Along with a crop of hip new galleries and eclectic shops in the Sugarhouse district, a vibrant performing arts scene, and a dynamic restaurant culture that focuses on all things wholesome and organic, the city is becoming ever more politically progressive and embracing inclusivity—a slew of new laws now facilitate immigration. Everywhere you go, the city thrums with an infectious cosmopolitan vibe. With more young immigrants and a growing gay and lesbian community, the city has fast become a hotbed of creativity. While many travelers still visit to view Temple Square, the rather surreal world headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), Brigham Young’s vision that ‘This is the place’ has taken on a whole new meaning for the city’s gregarious denizens who enjoy the trappings of a thoroughly modern city and an abundance of outdoor activities less than a one hour drive outside the city.
