Introducing Milan
The world’s fashion capital, Milan is a diva with a big personality and obscure talents. While the city’s ancient heritage is visible in a select number of restored buildings, Milan doesn’t have the depth or must-see sights that draw the masses to Rome, Venice, and Florence.
At the turn of the 20th century, Milan led the nation’s industrial progress and became a hotbed of social, economic, political, and philosophical debate. After a harsh Nazi occupation, the city found its esprit de corps as the leader of the Italian Resistance. A rebellious spirit continues to percolate throughout the city, most evident in the vibrant student districts.
Today, Milan is the engine room of the country’s economy, and home to the nation’s principal stock exchange (Borsa Italiana), national banks, and big hitting corporations. While tourism is generally of the hit and run variety, a handful of iconic landmarks that survived the Nazi onslaught satisfy even the most exacting travelers. Milan’s awesome cathedral is the fifth largest in the world and the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is adorned with paintings by Leonardo di Vinci. Then there is La Scala, the breathtaking opera house with the finest acoustics of any opera house in the world.
Milan’s religions are fashion and football. Fashionistas flock to the city’s temple of fashion, the Quadrilatero d’Oro (Golden Quad) to mingle with modern day gods of Versace, Prada, Armani, and Dolce & Gabbana. On any given Sunday, acolytes pay homage at the San Siro stadium to watch gladiatorial conflicts between AC Milan and Inter Milan, two of the nation’s best soccer teams.
