Introducing Benidorm
Loved and loathed in equal measure, Benidorm is a text book case of tourist over development. The Spanish resort never fails to deliver what it says on the tin: winter sun, budget accommodation, a stretch of (mostly) clean white sand, copious beer, and tea ‘just like your mum makes.’ The erstwhile Spanish fishing village on the sun-splashed Mediterranean coastline retains little of the Iberian old town charm which seduced thousands of British holiday makers in the 1960s. The landmark San Jaime church seems forlorn and rather out of place among the glut of tacky souvenir stalls, burger bars, and bingo halls that punctuate its cobblestone, labyrinthine streets. On any given day, almost 2,000 foreigners commandeer the white sands of Levante beach, Poniente beach, and Mal Pas, which are lined with concrete behemoths built in haste during the tourist onslaught of the 1980s. On the bright side, efforts to curb the town’s excesses and quell the malaise that afflicts disgruntled locals are beginning to gain momentum. Aiguera Park and its centerpiece amphitheater have sponsored an exciting range of cultural initiates, from flamenco dancing, to ballet, jazz to hip hop, and even a Russian choir for good measure. But, for many locals, Benidorm’s soul is beyond saving.
