Capital of the Saxon state, Dresden is synonymous with the trauma of World War II. Once known as the ‘Florence of the North,’ Saxon royalty made Dresden their home for almost 300 years (16th-19th century) and garnished the city’s streets with an array of architectural treasures. The New Green Vault, with its stunning fine art collection, forms the modern counterpart to the ancient treasures of the Historical Green Vault. There’s a verve to the New City (Neustadt), where the young and gilded congregate. Sleek restaurants rub shoulders with upscale boutiques and fashionable nightclubs.
