Introducing Prague

The immaculately preserved city of Prague is a Baroque jewel box indeed. Having survived the destruction and apoplexy that inflicted most of Europe in the 20th century, not to mention the stranglehold of 41 years of communist rule, Prague today is a thriving city. As early as the Middle Ages, the city became one of Europe’s leading cultural centers. Prague University, founded in 1348, spread the seeds of cultural enlightenment from which the seminal ideas of the Hussite Movement germinated and flourished, paving the way for the European Reformation. The heart of the city is the Stare Mesto (the Old Town). Along cobblestone streets where the music of Mozart and Dvorak fills the air, you’ll find kaleidoscopic markets, century-old delicatessens and pastry shops, cafés dripping with gold and marble, and the world’s finest display of crystal and glassware. The stunning St Vitus Cathedral was a work in progress from 1344 until 1929. An evening stroll across the beloved 14th-century Charles Bridge, passing some 30 religious statues on the way, affords enchanting views of Prague’s iconic castle crowning the hill of Hradcany. With an array of sparkling new museums and striking modernist buildings, Prague still captures the spirit of the age. The preeminent architects of today are leaving their imprint along the ancient cobbled streets and wide boulevards where Roman rulers, Tsars, Nazi soldiers, and Velvet Revolutionaries have walked. Along the riverfront, the Dancing House is signature Frank Gehry, a voluptuous writhing structure often referred to as Fred and Ginger. The colossal Dox Center for Contemporary Art and the boutique Hunt Kastner Artworks, with an emphasis on young Czech artists, are revitalizing the city’s modern art scene.
