Introducing Long Island

Stretching northeast from New York Harbor into the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island is comprised of four counties; Kings and Queens, and the largely suburban Nassau and Suffolk. The name ‘Long Island’ is reserved in popular usage for Nassau and Suffolk counties. A tangle of picturesque villages snake the southern shores of Long Island, unfurling from Westhampton to Montauk, and are iconically referred to simply as the ‘Hamptons.’ The Hamptons is Long Island’s enfant terrible. The young and old commingle with high powered executives, politicians, celebrities, and sports personalities for indulgent fun in the sun.

Painter Winslow Homer first evoked the “Pleasures of Summertime” in 1874 and, nowadays, with its beautiful beaches, designer boutiques, antique stores, wineries, world-class restaurants, and all manner of water and land based activity, it’s a clichéd formula that remains an ever seductive mix. While East Hampton is all about über brands and upscale restaurants, Sag Harbor exudes an unpretentious, back-to-nature aura, and then there’s Montauk, an artsy, boho enclave where run-down motels and homey diners have been recast as artistic hangouts that would not be out of place on the pages of a glossy magazine. With its strong agricultural heritage and a flourishing local wine industry, North Fork is reminiscent of Napa 20 years ago. Centered upon the idyllic bayside town of Greenport, the area boasts a lively arts scene, a blue-and-white striped design ethos that is du jour in these parts and, at every turn, farm-to-table is the buzz word for a thriving epicurean culture.
