Introducing Geneva

It isn’t even a capital city but Geneva feels like the center of the earth. It feels as though all the world’s diplomatic institutions, agencies, peacekeepers, charity workers, and international politicos make Geneva their home. It’s no wonder that the city has something of a superiority complex. For a start, it has a most beguiling setting, overlooking Europe’s largest Alpine lake. Then there’s the pristine old city, dominated by the spires of the Cathedral of St. Pierre, and its enchanting main street Grand Rue where a bewildering number of languages fill the air, and where the 18th-century philosopher Rousseau was born. There is a certain control and precision that underscores the city’s cosmopolitan verve— a talent exemplified by the artful ingenuity of Swiss watchmakers, the best in the world. Then there is particle physics. Cern, the European Organization for Nuclear Research with its Hadron Collider, is based in Meyrin, five miles west of the city.
