Introducing Fresno

Serving as the launch pad for the region’s majestic National Parks and Forests; Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon National Parks and Sierra National Forest, Fresno, on paper, has all the functional appeal of a gateway city. However, as popular culture references will testify, Fresno has its own groove going, in a big way—not many towns can lay claim to having spawned a mini series in their honor (Carol Burnett and Charles Grodin starred in the 1980s soap opera parody) or can be credited with the evolution of a California funk dance style known as ‘popping’ in the 1970s. Not one to shun its historical import, Fresno also plays host to the largest Civil War reenactment on the West Coast at Kearney Park, the largest of the Fresno region’s park systems and home to historic Kearney Mansion. Downtown Fresno offers a handful of sights and expansive parks to keep families amused and energized for a couple of days. In North Fresno, Woodward Park features the Shinzen Japanese Gardens and a grandiose amphitheater which hosts the Woodward Shakespeare Festival, in addition to picnic areas, miles of forested hiking trails, an equestrian trail, and playgrounds galore. Roeding Park, near Downtown Fresno, is home to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, Rotary Storyland, and Playland.
