Introducing Dublin

Dublin’s image as a place of misty mountains, leprechauns, four-leaf clovers, and Guinness is so ingrained in the popular consciousness that it takes effort to transcend the clichés. With its back to northern Europe, Ireland’s capital city marries economic, political, and cultural prestige with a rich, traditional Irish culture and fun-loving spirit.

Dublin is a city of surprises. Beyond the crenelated towers of Dublin’s 13th-century castle, the Victorian pubs serving meat pies spiked with Guinness, and the Georgian town homes where Samuel Beckett and Oscar Wilde once lived, there’s a modern dynamism that exemplifies the onwards and upwards spirit of Dubliners the world over.

Some 35 per cent of the Irish population live within Dublin’s greater metropolitan area. With such diversity comes choice and in many ways Dublin feels like a metropolis contained within a village. From traditional fish and chips to Dublin Bay oysters, from chain store outlets to hippie markets and haute couture, the city has a style that is all things to all men.

With world-class museums, iconic monuments, and a thriving art scene, Dublin’s cultural index has soared over recent years. There’s the National Museum, which traces Ireland’s heritage from 2000 B.C. to the present. In 2001, Francis Bacon’s studio—including 100 slashed canvases, 70 drawings and 2,000 art materials, and two pairs of torn corduroy pants—was relocated to Dublin City Gallery. The Dublin Writers Museum features a collection of objects that belonged to Ireland’s most beloved writers, including James Joyce’s typewriter and letters penned by Samuel Beckett.
