Introducing Bremen

The industrial powerhouse of Bremen stands proud on the River Weser. The foundations of Bremen’s thriving economy are Aerospace (the second largest Airbus site in Germany), car manufacturing (Mercedes-Benz), food production (Kellogg’s and Kraft), and maritime industries (Bremen is one of Germany’s most important ports). With its futuristic Technology Park, Bremen has helped bolster Germany’s hi-tech credentials on the world stage.

Bremen’s most interesting sights are to be found in the Altstadt (Old Town). The Marktplatz is the oldest part of the city and is dominated by the Renaissance façade of Bremen’s Town Hall. The presidential seat of Bremen’s Senate, the Town Hall is considered one of the finest examples of brick Gothic architecture in the world. The restaurant’s Apostel chamber is the unlikely home of 12 of the oldest wines in the world, each stored in their original barrels. The houses that encircle the Marketplatz were the first buildings in Bremen to be restored to their former glory after World War II, by the ever proud and ever stoical denizens of Bremen themselves. On the south side of the Marktplatz is the Böttcherstraffe district named for the barrel makers who used to live and work there. An inspired coffee magnate named Ludwig Roselius commissioned local artists to convert the narrow street into a lavish parade of Gothic and Art Nouveau edifices. The Glockenspiel House, with its carillon of porcelain bells, is one of Bremen’s most popular attractions.
